On the 24th of March, the world commemorates the day in 1882 that Dr.Robert Koch announced his discovery of “Mycobacterium tuberculosis”-
Despite tubersulosis is among deseases which can be prevented and treated many people in the world and people in our country still suffer from tuberculosis.
TB Azerbaijan Coalition (the Azerbaijan Red Crescent Society is a member of the Coalition) supports the National Tuberculosis Propram in preventing TB in the country.
Today Azerbaijan is among countries where many people are ill with TB, especially with a drug- resistant TB. A study on DR-TB initiated in 2012 in Azerbaijan showed that a rate of MDR-TB which is a severe form of TB requiring a long period of treatment (20-24 months) among new patients is 13%, but among patients receining a repeated treatment is 27,5%. This is very high rate for our country. According to the World Health Organization Azerbaijan is among 27 countries with a high rate of MRD-TB ill patients.
Therefore, TB Azerbaijan Coalition called on the representatives of mass media to highligh TB issue and the concerned bodies to prevent the spread of TB in the country.
Thus, on 23 March 2017, on the occasion of World TB Day there was held a meeting with community members of Fizuli district accomodated in Communication College hostels. The meeting took place in a sondary school No.47 in Yasamal distirct of Baku city.
The members of Azerbaijan TB Coalition, a director of a secondary school No.47 Sahima Vasilova and teachers of that secondary school, a doctor from TB Dispensary Sevinj Mirfeyzullayeva and members of 20 vulnerable IDP families from Agdam, Fizuli, Kalbajar, Lachin districts participated at the meeting. The Azerbaijan Red Crescent Society was represented at the meeting by an employee of Migration department Sona Hajiyeva.
The members of TB Azerbaijan Coalition informed participants about TB and preventive measures against TB. A video clip produced with finance asistance of the Global Fund for Tuberculosis and Malaria was demonstarted during the meeting. The director of a secondary school No.47 Sahima Vasilova and community members in their speeches noted an importance of such meetings and promotional activities on TB and expressed their gratitude to organizers. The demonstrated video clip was produced with recommendations of representatives of the World Health Organization and national coordinator of TB-REP program and Head of National TB program of the Minisitry of Health Viktor Gasimov. At the end of the meeting Novruz (Spring) holiday gifts, mainly foord parcels were given to vulnerable IDP families.
