Plenary sessions of the 21st General Assembly of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies

On 7 November 2017, the 21st General Assembly of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies started its plenary sessions.

At first, the Secretary General of the IFRC Elhadj As Sy presented his 2 years activity report to the plenary session. He widely informed the participants about activities implemented in 2015-2017 in the four strategic directions and the eight Areas of Focus of the 2016-2020 IFRC Plan and Budget, as well as progress achieved in these directions and areas.

In his speech at the plenary session President of the Azerbaijan Red Crescent Society Dr.Novruz Aslanov noted that the Secretary General’s leadership and activity in 2015-2017 can be characterized as the period of formulation of strategically important plans, initiatives aimed at reaching a clear understanding, implementing and further developing a structure of the International Federation Secretariat, its objectives, as well as on the whole, the goals and mission of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. Noting that the relationship between the regional offices of the IFRC and the National Societies has been recently strengthened Dr.Novruz Aslanov also added: “We are very pleased with the IFRC’s decision on opening of its new office for the Southern Caucasus region. The Azerbaijan Red Crescent Society held mutual discussions on it with the representatives of the IFRC for several years”. In his speech Dr.Novruz Aslanov noted that in order to tackle emerging humanitarian crises we need the combined efforts of all components of the Movement, solving problems jointly, better coordination of our activities, active involvement of volunteers and youth into our activities.

The International Federation’s Youth Policy has been also presented and discussed in the plenary session of the General Assembly. At first, chairman of the IFRC Youth Commission Bas van Rossum informed about the concept and importance of the Youth Policy. He called on the National Societies to support new policy.

Youth delegate of the Azerbaijan Red Crescent Society Naila Omarova also delivered a speech at a plenary session of the General Assembly. In her speech Naila Omarova first thanked the IFRC for providing opportunity to young people from the National Societies to address through this important platform. She noted that the youth has always been and continue to be on the focus of the Azerbaijan Red Crescent Society. The youth has always been supported and continue to be supported by the leadership of her National Society. Being a member of the Youth Committee established in 2004 in the National Society I am also appointed by our National Society’s leadership as head of the International Relations department of the Az.RC. This is an indicator of trust and support given by our National Society’s leadership to youth. Stressing that she fully supports the International Federation’s Youth Policy Naila Omarova expressed her confidence that this Policy would help young people to be actively involved in activities of our International Movement.

Following the plenary session there was organized a workshop on “The International Federation’s Strategy 2030- building the future” with participation of representatives of the National Societies. On the part of the Azerbaijan Red Crescent Society the Executive Secretary of the AzRC Jeyhun Mirzayev and head of the International Relations department Naila Omarova participated at the workshop.

On 7 November 2017, President of the Azerbaijan Red Crescent Society Dr.Novruz Aslanov held a meeting with the leadership of Magen David Adom National Society of Israel. Current cooperation relations between the two National Societies and perspectives for further strengthening of these relations as well as an importance of strengthening an implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the two National Societies were discussed at the meeting.
