Council of Delegates meetings of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement

The Council of Delegates of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement started its plenary sessions on 10-11 November 2017, in Antalya city of Turkey. It should be mentioned that the meetings of the Council of Delegates are being held in every 2 years and lasts 2 days with participation of representatives of the International Federation, the International Committee of the Red Cross and 190 National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.

The main issues in an agenda of a plenary session of the Council of Delegates were: Strengthening Movement cooperation and communication, Movement-wide vision and principles for resource mobilization, activities towards responding to needs of vulnerable migrants, prevention of the use of nuclear weapons and education. The participants discussed Resolutions adopted on these issues.

The representatives of delegation from the Azerbaijan Red Crescent Society also made statements on relevant subjects during the meetings of the Council of Delegates and expressed their full support to the adopted Resolutions. It should be mentioned that these resolutions have been adopted with a majority of votes of the Council of Delegates participants.

On 10 November President of the Azerbaijan Red Crescent Society Dr.Novruz Aslanov met with newly elected IFRC President Francesco Rocca and Secretary General Elhadj As Sy. First, Dr.Novruz Aslanov congratulated Francesco Rocca on the occasion of his election to the post of the IFRC President and wished him every success in this humanitarian mission. Expressing his satisfaction with current cooperation relations between the International Federation and the Azerbaijan Red Crescent Society Dr.Novruz Aslanov noted that the Azerbaijan Red Crescent Society is always ready to work with the IFRC towards even more strengthening these relations.

President of the AzRC Dr.Novruz Aslanov also met with a former IFRC President who is also President of the Red Cross society of Japan Tadateru Konoe. Strengthening cooperation and partnership relations between the two National Societies have been discussed during that meeting.

During the Council of Delegates meetings the representatives of the Azerbaijan Red Crescent Society actively participated at workshops on different topics such as “Restoring family links”, “ Movement communication”, Defining an agenda of resilience and acting as leaders in emergencies and in time of climate change”, “From words to action –  participation and responsibility of communities” and “Psychosocial support”.

At the end of the Statutory Meetings of the International Federation a traditional awarding ceremonies of “Henry Dunant”, “Henri Davison”, “Florence Nightingale”  “Youth in the Movement” and “Volunteering and Development” medals were held. Those who distinguished among others for their significant services to the Movement were awarded with these medals of the Movement. Among the Movement medals recipients were:  Professor Michael Bothe from the British Red Cross and Arthur Agany from the South Sudan Red Cross were awarded with “ Henry Dunant” medal which is the highest medal of the Movement. Volunteers of the Turkish Red Crescent Society were awarded with “Henry Davison” medal for their relief activities in favor of refugees. It should be mentioned that 39 nurses from 32 countries were awarded with “Florence Nightingale” medal. In addition, youth representatives from the Nicaraguan Red Cross, Brazilian Red Cross, the New Zealand Red Cross Society, Colombian Red Cross, the Finnish Red Cross, Republic of Korea National Red Cross, the Pakistan Red Crescent Society and the Tajikistan Red Crescent Society were awarded with “Youth in the Movement” medal for their active participation in the International Movement. Volunteers of Nigerian Red Cross and the Chilean Red Cross were awarded with “Volunteering and Development” medal.

In conclusion, we would like to mention that the next Statutory Meetings of the International RC/RC Movement will take place in 2019 in Geneva city of Switzerland.
